Apple has announced that payments from the $50 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit over faulty MacBook butterfly keyboards will soon be distributed to affected customers. The court issued a payment order in June 2024, with payments expected to be made by August 2024 for approved claims. Eligible MacBook owners who experienced keyboard issues such as repeating keys, sticking keys, or failures due to debris could receive up to $395 if they had at least two topcase replacements, up to $125 with one topcase repair, or up to $50 for keycap replacements. This settlement follows years of litigation over Apple's use of butterfly keyboards in MacBooks from 2015 to 2019, which were plagued by reliability issues. Although Apple attempted to address the problem with repair programs, the butterfly keyboards ultimately proved ineffective, leading to a return to the more reliable scissor switch mechanism in later models.
