'Catherine Laga'aia Cast as Lead in Disney's Live-Action Moana'

Disney has announced Sydney-based newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as the new Moana in the remake of the 2016 animated film. The 17-year-old actor, with roots in Samoa, is set to star alongside Dwayne Johnson as Maui. Laga‘aia expressed her excitement at representing the culture of the Pacific Islands and young girls who share her heritage. Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced the original Moana, will executive produce and mentor Laga‘aia. The diverse cast includes actors from New Zealand and Samoa, with Thomas Kail of "Hamilton" fame directing. The highly anticipated remake is scheduled for release in 2026, continuing the success of the beloved Disney film. With top talent behind the project, including Lin-Manuel Miranda as producer, "Moana" is set to make a splash once again.
