The incident involving a driverless ride-hailing car in China hitting a pedestrian has sparked a debate on social media, with many supporting the carmaker Baidu due to reports that the pedestrian was crossing against the light. Baidu stated that the car had minor contact with the pedestrian after moving when the light turned green, and the individual was taken to the hospital with no apparent external injuries. The situation in Wuhan underscores the challenges autonomous driving technology faces in handling complex scenarios, especially when dealing with unconventional behavior like pedestrians disobeying traffic laws. Baidu, a prominent player in autonomous driving development in China, runs the Apollo Go ride-hailing service with a fleet of 300 cars in Wuhan, as well as in select parts of Beijing, Shenzhen, and Chongqing. The company recently launched its sixth-generation driverless taxi, reducing the unit cost to under $30,000.
