Gen Xers, the first generation to rely on 401(k) plans for retirement, are facing a harsh reality as they approach their golden years. Almost half of Gen Xers say it would take a "miracle" for them to retire comfortably, with the average retirement savings of about $150,000 falling far short of the $1.5 million needed for a comfortable retirement. Many are woefully unprepared, lacking both sufficient savings and financial knowledge. Despite this, Gen Xers have optimistic retirement plans, with many hoping to retire at 60 even as they acknowledge they may need to return to work due to insufficient savings. Overlooked like Jan Brady, Gen X is struggling to plan for retirement amidst larger generations attracting more attention. Unrealistic expectations about investment performance and a lack of understanding about key financial concepts pose additional challenges. With the pressures of having to figure out retirement largely on their own, many Gen Xers are feeling stressed and opting to ignore the issue altogether. However, with factors like health and job security out of their control, the reality of retirement may be harsher than their expectations.
