Fiona Harvey, a Scottish lawyer, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix, claiming that the hit series "Baby Reindeer" is based on her and has had devastating effects on her life and mental health. Alleging that she received death threats following the show's debut and that her reputation was destroyed, Harvey has experienced intense panic, fear, anxiety, and isolation since being identified as the real-life Martha in the series. Fans quickly identified her online after searching for a key phrase used by the character in the show. Despite Netflix's disclaimer that certain elements were fictionalized, Harvey seeks $170 million in damages, accusing the streaming service of breaching its duty of care and insufficiently disguising her identity. Netflix intends to vigorously defend the lawsuit, stating they stand by creator Richard Gadd's right to tell his story. Harvey contends that the portrayal of her relationship with Gadd departs from reality, emphasizing that she only met him a few times and sent him a few emails.
