Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (CSSE) has filed for bankruptcy after accumulating nearly $1 billion in debt, including $325 million from its purchase of Redbox. The streaming service company, which also owns Crackle, revealed in a Delaware filing that it owes money to major companies such as Walmart, Walgreens, and Sony Pictures. With only $400 million in assets, CSSE's stock has plummeted by 90% over the past year. The bankruptcy comes shortly after reports of delayed payments to employees and suspended health care benefits. Redbox, with 27,000 DVD rental kiosks across the U.S., was part of CSSE's expansion plan in 2022. The company, a subsidiary of Chicken Soup for the Soul, LLC., has declined to provide further comment on the matter.
