AT&T recently disclosed a significant data breach affecting millions of its cellular customers, MVNO subscribers, and some landline customers. The breach, which occurred between May 1 and Oct. 31, 2022, exposed records of calls, text messages, and phone numbers of affected customers. Fortunately, sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers was not compromised. The data was illegally accessed from a third-party cloud platform, leading to the arrest of at least one individual. AT&T plans to notify approximately 110 million current and former customers affected by the breach. This incident highlights the increasing challenges in securing data stored in cloud environments and the urgent need for stronger data protection measures. Consumers are advised to change passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and monitor accounts for suspicious activity. This breach raises important questions about corporate responsibility, national security, and the need for improved data protection regulations.
