The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles has announced changes to its exhibit on Hollywood’s Jewish roots following backlash from Jewish activists. The exhibit, titled Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital, opened on May 19 and faced criticism for its negative portrayal of Jewish studio founders, with some calling it antisemitic. An open letter from United Jewish Writers demanded a redo of the exhibit to celebrate Jewish founders respectfully. The museum has acknowledged concerns and will revise the exhibition to address stereotypes, with input from experts on the Jewish community and civil rights. The exhibit, based on Neal Gabler’s book on Hollywood’s founding, aims to highlight the contributions of Jewish immigrants like Louis B. Mayer and Sam Goldwyn to the American film industry. The museum’s response reflects a commitment to telling important stories accurately and respectfully.
