The research team, led by Umut Güçlü, has developed groundbreaking mind-reading technology that has the potential to revolutionize treatments for vision loss. By conducting two studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and AI algorithms, the team was able to accurately reconstruct images seen by volunteers and a macaque monkey. The first study involved capturing neural activity in the visual cortex of volunteers as they viewed pictures of faces, which was then fed into the AI algorithm to recreate the images. The second study reanalyzed data from experiments on a monkey with electrode arrays implanted in its brain, recording its activity while viewing AI-generated images. This cutting-edge technology represents a significant step forward in understanding and potentially restoring vision, setting the stage for innovative new treatments in the future.
