Allegations of Stolen Records Use by Washington Post Publisher and Incoming Editor in the UK

Two decades ago, The Washington Post's publisher and incoming editor allegedly used fraudulently obtained phone and company records in newspaper articles during their time as journalists in London. Will Lewis, the publisher, assigned one of these articles while serving as business editor of The Sunday Times in 2004, and Robert Winnett, the incoming executive editor of The Post, wrote another. This scandal is linked to a larger issue in British newspapers involving deception, hacking, and fraud, which resulted in the downfall of a major tabloid in 2010. Despite these claims, Mr. Lewis insists his involvement was only in addressing the problematic behavior after the fact while working for Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. This revelation has sparked debate and controversy surrounding ethics in journalism and the accountability of those in positions of power within the media industry.
