Allstate, one of California's largest insurers, is seeking approval for a 34% increase in homeowners' rates, potentially the largest hike this year affecting over 350,000 policyholders. Last year, Allstate requested a 39.6% increase, which was later amended to 34.1%. Consumer Watchdog is demanding more transparency from the company regarding the reasoning behind the significant increase, citing the use of secret algorithms to determine risk and pricing. This request surpasses State Farm's recent 30% hike and follows State Farm's decision to not renew 72,000 property owner policies. With insurance rates in California already spiked by nearly 40% since 2019, many companies are threatening to pull out of the state unless reforms are implemented by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to address the industry's challenges.
