Amazon has been fined $5,901,700 by the California Labor Commissioner's office for violating the state's AB-701 law, aimed at protecting warehouse workers. This law requires large companies like Amazon to inform workers of expected quotas, task frequency, and potential consequences for failing to meet quotas. The fine was issued after Amazon was found in violation of these rules at facilities in Moreno Valley and Redlands, with over 59,000 infractions documented. The company argued that its "peer-to-peer system" eliminated the need for written information, but the Labor Commissioner disagreed, stating that such undisclosed quotas increase pressure on workers and raise injury rates. Amazon has appealed the fines, claiming no fixed quotas and encouraging performance reviews. This case highlights the ongoing debate over worker rights and protections in the technology industry.
