Amazon is currently investigating claims that artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI is scraping content from various websites, including prominent news sites, without authorization. Perplexity, which utilizes servers by Amazon Web Services, has been accused of violating terms of service by WIRED in a recent investigation. Despite these allegations, Perplexity spokesperson Sara Platnick maintains that the company is operating within AWS guidelines.
The San Francisco-based startup, backed by notable investors including Jeff Bezos, faced backlash after publishing summarized news stories without proper attribution, leading to accusations of plagiarism. CEO Aravind Srinivas defended the company's practices, stating that their AI system does not plagiarize content and now highlights sources more prominently.
However, concerns continue to mount as The Associated Press discovered fake quotes attributed to real individuals in another Perplexity product. The situation is ongoing as Amazon assesses the situation based on reports received from various sources.
