Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18, where it will work alongside Siri to handle requests for AI-generated content. However, ChatGPT and similar AI services are not available in China, prompting Apple to seek a local partner. The Wall Street Journal reports that talks with Baidu, Alibaba Group, and Baichuan AI have not resulted in a deal yet. With the upcoming launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple has announced that its Intelligence features may not be available in the EU and China without a partnership. Chinese regulations require government approval for chatbots with large language models, posing a challenge for Apple. Despite efforts to develop its own model, Chinese regulators are hesitant to grant approval. To make Intelligence features accessible in China, Apple must secure a deal with a local AI company. The timeline for a Chinese version of Apple Intelligence remains uncertain, but the company is facing competition from Chinese smartphone brands that already offer AI features. Apple's success in China may hinge on its ability to navigate regulatory hurdles and partner with a local AI company in time for a potential launch.
