A coastal vacation home in Nantucket, Massachusetts, facing severe beach erosion was recently sold for only six figures, well below its assessed value of nearly $2 million. The 1,700-square-foot home was purchased by Don Vaccaro, owner of a neighboring property, for $200,000, a deal that saved the home from being lost to erosion. The sellers, Jane Carlin and Ben Gifford, had considered donating the home to housing non-profits to relocate it before selling. Vaccaro plans to use the property until it is inevitably claimed by the sea in 2025, potentially utilizing mitigation techniques to slow erosion. Despite the high risk of coastal erosion in Nantucket, beachfront homes remain highly sought after, with median asking prices reaching $4.7 million. Vaccaro's purchase not only saves a historic home but also potentially benefits Ukrainian refugees in the off-season.
