In a major data breach, the call and text message records of tens of millions of AT&T cellphone customers and non-AT&T customers in mid-to-late 2022 were exposed. The breach, blamed on an “illegal download” on a third-party cloud platform, compromised telephone numbers, call logs, and interaction details of nearly all cellular customers from May to October 2022. International calls were not included except calls to Canada. The breach also affected AT&T landline customers who interacted with cell numbers. Customer names were not exposed, but cell site identification numbers linked to calls and texts were exposed. AT&T reassured that personal information such as Social Security numbers were not compromised. The company has taken steps to address the breach and cooperate with law enforcement. The incident is separate from another data leak earlier in the year, showcasing the company's ongoing commitment to data protection.
