AT&T paid a hacker around $370,000 to delete stolen customer data following a hacking incident. Negotiations were carried out through an intermediary known as Reddington, who represented a member of the ShinyHunters hacking group. The hacker initially demanded $1 million but settled for the lower amount, which AT&T paid in bitcoin on May 17th. A video was provided to confirm the data deletion. Reddington believes that the only complete copy of the data was erased post-ransom payment, however, there is a possibility of excerpts still being out in the wild. Furthermore, Reddington has claimed to have negotiated with multiple other companies on behalf of the hackers. This incident sheds light on the growing threat of cyberattacks and the lengths companies are willing to go to protect sensitive customer information.
