The Beastie Boys filed a lawsuit against Chili’s Grill & Bar in federal court for using their hit song “Sabotage” in promotional videos without permission. Brinker International, Chili’s main operator, released these ads on social media starting in November 2022, using significant portions of the song to parody the iconic music video directed by Spike Jonze. The music video, known for its playful tribute to 1970s TV crime dramas, features the group members in wigs and mustaches from the era. In the Chili’s advertisement, characters dressed in ’70s attire are shown stealing ingredients from a restaurant, accompanied by the sound of “Sabotage.” The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, accuses Chili’s of copyright infringement.
