BMW of North America is recalling over 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to potentially dangerous airbag inflators that could explode, risking severe injuries or even death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that metal fragments from the inflator could strike the driver or passengers in the vehicle, posing a grave risk. While BMW has not received reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue, the recall covers certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan, 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon, and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan vehicles. Owners will receive notification letters and have the driver's airbag module inspected and replaced free of charge by BMW dealers.
