California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed emergency legislation exempting restaurants from a new "junk fees" law set to take effect Monday. In addition, several other laws will also be implemented on the same day including the "No Roofies Law," which mandates bars and nightclubs to provide date-rape testing kits for patrons and post signage about their availability. Another law benefiting renters limits security deposits in new rental contracts to one month's rent, while existing agreements remain unaffected. Landlords can still request additional fees for damages exceeding one month's deposit at the end of a lease period. Furthermore, the Right to Repair law requires manufacturers to provide customers or repair shops with parts, tools, and instructions needed to service electronic devices such as cellphones, home appliances, TVs, and video recording equipment above $50. These new laws aim to protect consumers, renters, and ensure accountability in the electronics repair industry.
