California has fined Amazon a total of $5.9 million for violating the state's Warehouse Quota Law at facilities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The law, implemented in 2022, requires employers to provide written notice of quotas and potential disciplinary actions for not meeting them. Amazon was fined $1.2 million at one warehouse and $4.7 million at another. Amazon refutes the allegations, stating that they do not have fixed quotas and evaluate individual performance over time. However, the Labor Commissioner argues that undisclosed quotas can lead to increased pressure on workers, higher injury rates, and violations. The investigation was prompted by reports from employees at the Southern California facilities, alleging unfair quota practices. Similar legislation has been enacted in other states, and a federal version was introduced in Congress in May. Amazon has appealed the citations.
