Apple has introduced a groundbreaking feature in iOS 18 called Messages via satellite, allowing iPhone users to send and receive iMessages and SMS texts, including emoji and Tapbacks, even when outside of cellular and Wi-Fi network coverage. This new feature, along with other satellite-enabled services like Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance, can be accessed when your phone detects it's out of range of terrestrial networks. Messages via satellite are end-to-end encrypted for enhanced security, and while iMessages can be freely exchanged, there are limitations on SMS due to promotional messages. Apple's satellite services, including Messages via satellite, will initially launch in the United States and will eventually expand to other countries. Despite the upcoming support for RCS in iOS 18, Messages via satellite will not initially support RCS due to optimization constraints. Apple has stated that while it plans to charge for satellite services in the future, they are currently being offered for free.
