Marvel Entertainment has sparked controversy in the Jewish press by altering the identity of a long-standing Israeli character, Ruth Bat-Seraph, for the upcoming film "Captain America: Brave New World." Originally introduced in Marvel comics as an agent for Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, Bat-Seraph was a mutant known as Sabra. The decision to transform Sabra into a former Black Widow with a new American identity has incited backlash from pro-Israel activists, accusing Marvel of succumbing to political pressure and erasing the character's Israeli roots. In response to the criticism, Disney, Marvel's parent company, announced a different approach to the character for the movie release next year. The move has drawn condemnation from those who view the alteration as a disservice to both the character's history and the Jewish-American community. Marvel's decision raises questions surrounding representation, integrity, and the impact of political influences in the entertainment industry.
