Dollar Tree faced criticism from the FDA for failing to promptly remove lead and chromium-contaminated WanaBana cinnamon apple fruit puree pouches from its stores. Despite a voluntary recall in November 2023 due to unsafe levels of lead, public health officials found the products on shelves months later. The FDA linked the contamination to the cinnamon used, leading to numerous cases of lead poisoning across 32 states. Other brands were also found to have unsafe levels of lead and chromium. Dollar Tree's response to the situation was deemed inadequate by the FDA, prompting concerns about the safety of their products. Lead poisoning can have severe consequences, particularly for children, who absorb more lead and may suffer long-term effects. Dollar Tree has since taken steps to improve compliance and safety measures, but questions remain about the removal of contaminated products from shelves.
