Microsoft has unveiled Prism, a new x86-64 emulator for Arm-based Windows laptops, promising improved performance. This update is crucial as Windows transitions to a dual-architecture ecosystem, supporting both x86-64 and Arm-64. While many apps now have native Arm versions, older x86-64 apps still require emulation. With Windows 11 24H2, featuring the Snapdragon X processor, Microsoft claims significant performance enhancements. Initial tests show a 10% improvement in Firefox speed, 8% in Cinebench single-core performance, and 4.5% in multi-core. HandBrake encoding time also improved by 8%. While progress is evident, there are still challenges to overcome. The goal is to enhance user experience, bridging the gap until more developers embrace native Arm applications. This update is a step in the right direction, offering hope for the future of Windows on Arm.
