EU Scrutinizes Tesla Giga Shanghai for Tariff Compliance

European Union inspectors recently visited Tesla Giga Shanghai in the context of Europe's provisional tariffs on electric vehicle imports from China. The EU Commission's tariffs on China-made EVs came into effect on July 5, 2024, giving member states four months to discuss and implement them. Politico reported that the EU inspectors' visit to Tesla's gigafactory was shorter than those to other Chinese automakers, despite Tesla's significant role in the investigation. Although Tesla requested to be included in the sample examined by the Commission, their request was denied. However, Tesla participated in trade proceedings with the Commission, resulting in a lower duty rate of 20.8% compared to the sampled companies. The Commission's decision to assign individual duties to BYD, Geely, and SAIC may also impact Tesla in the future. Contact maria@teslarati.com or X @Writer_01001101 for more information.
