The demand for data centers is rapidly increasing due to the rise of artificial intelligence, prompting Europe to consider launching data centers into space to reduce energy consumption on the ground. The ASCEND study, backed by the European Commission, has found that space-based data centers are technically, economically, and environmentally feasible. These facilities would orbit at a high altitude and aim to deploy 1,300 building blocks by 2050, achieving a 1 gigawatt capacity. However, concerns about the environmental impact and costs associated with launching and maintaining space data centers remain. While the concept may not fully solve the issue of sustainable energy usage, it could benefit from increased efficiency from solar power. Despite some skepticism around security risks, industry experts believe that space data centers could be suitable for specific applications like military, broadcasting, telecommunications, and financial trading services.
