At a space conference in Singapore 11 years ago, a panel discussion revealed European attitudes toward SpaceX, particularly regarding lower launch costs and reusability with the Falcon 9 rocket. Arianespace representative Richard Bowles dismissed SpaceX's promises, calling them a "dream" and expressing skepticism about SpaceX's plans for frequent launches. SpaceX senior vice president Barry Matsumori countered, stating that actions would speak louder than words. Fast forward to today, SpaceX has surpassed expectations, launching over 100 times a year at a fraction of the cost. Consequently, European launch officials are facing a crisis as SpaceX dominates the market with its innovation and reusability. Despite these challenges, some European officials remain complacent about SpaceX's impact and the potential of the Starship rocket. This indifference to change mirrors past criticisms of SpaceX that proved to be shortsighted. In a rapidly evolving space industry, overlooking innovation and reusability could be a costly mistake for European launch providers.
