Google had been working on foldables for quite some time before launching the Pixel Fold in June 2023. A leaked prototype, known as Pipit, features a design from the Pixel 6 era. Initially called "passport," references to foldables then switched to "pipit," leading to speculation about the development process. Pipit closely resembles the first-gen Pixel Fold but with a camera bar from the Pixel 6 generation. The device was powered by the first-gen Tensor and Exynos Modem 5123 instead of newer versions. Google had prototyped stylus support for the Fold, but concerns about durability led to its removal. The Pipit foldable was equipped with two main lenses, including a 12.2-megapixel main sensor and a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor. The device eventually converged into what was launched as the Pixel Fold alongside the Pixel 6 series.
