The lawyer representing Fiona Harvey in her $170M defamation lawsuit against Netflix over the series Baby Reindeer has seized on a report alleging that the streaming giant pressured Richard Gadd to brand the show as a true story, despite his reservations. The attorney, Richard Roth, stated that this accusation goes beyond negligence and suggests intentional misconduct on Netflix's part.
Roth expects Gadd to testify in court if necessary, as they pursue the lawsuit in California to avoid potential legal loopholes in the UK where the series was filmed. Harvey, the inspiration for the character Martha, has reportedly been deeply impacted by the show, receiving death threats and feeling too scared to go grocery shopping.
Netflix has promised to vigorously defend against the lawsuit, stating that they stand by Gadd's right to share his story. Roth argues that the $170M in damages is justified based on the show's success and Netflix's profit from it.
