The CDC and FDA have pinpointed a Florida grower, Bedner Growers, Inc., as the likely source of a salmonella outbreak caused by tainted cucumbers. A monthlong investigation revealed that salmonella from untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers matched the strain sickening individuals in 31 states and the District of Columbia. Additional salmonella strains were found in soil and water samples at the farm. Bedner Growers supplies Fresh Start Produce Sales, prompting a recall of cucumbers shipped to 14 states. Although the growing season has ended and there is no ongoing risk, 449 cases have been reported with no deaths but 125 hospitalizations. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and can be fatal in severe cases. This incident highlights the need for strict food safety measures to prevent future outbreaks.
