Turkey's ambassador to Germany was summoned to the foreign ministry in Berlin after Turkish footballer Merih Demiral displayed the rightwing extremist "wolf salute" as his goal celebration at the European Championship. The gesture, associated with the Grey Wolves group, sparked a diplomatic exchange between the two countries. Despite Germany urging Turkey to prevent further use of the symbol, it is not banned in Germany, where the group has a significant presence. The display of the wolf salute during Turkey's match against Austria sparked controversy, with Germany's interior minister condemning it as racist. The success of the Turkish national team in the Euros has been widely celebrated by Turks in Germany, the country's largest Turkish diaspora. Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, made a last-minute trip to Berlin to show his support for the team. The symbol reflects the extremist views of the Grey Wolves group, which has a history of terrorism and hatred towards various groups.
