While most Americans have some level of immunity from previous infections or vaccine doses, the new vaccines provide an additional layer of protection. However, this protection may only last a few months as immunity wanes and the virus continues to mutate. Alarmingly, data presented at a recent meeting showed that a vast majority of Americans hospitalized for Covid had not received any vaccine doses.
