Netflix and Amazon are dominating the global commissioning race by ordering the majority of their titles from outside the U.S. according to research from Ampere Analysis. The platforms commissioned over half of the world's streaming content in the first quarter of 2024, with Netflix leading with more than 200 shows and movies while Amazon followed with around 140. Their international spend is predicted to continue rising as they focus on territories like India and Korea. Despite competitors scaling back, Netflix and Amazon are increasing investments in international productions to stimulate subscriber growth. Netflix is diversifying its movie orders in regions like the Nordics and Asia Pacific, while Amazon is heavily targeting key markets like India. The pair’s approach reflects a shift towards a more localized global strategy to cater to a broad subscriber base and maximize potential crossover appeal.
