Google's Advanced Protection Program now offers "passkeys" as a password killer to enhance account security for users facing targeted digital attacks. Previously available for regular accounts, passkeys have become the default login option, but were only recently extended to APP users. Designed for individuals in public-facing or controversial roles, APP requires strict security measures such as multi-factor authentication. With passkeys now an option, APP becomes more accessible worldwide. Passkeys, which offer high security without the inconvenience of hardware tokens, are seen as a more user-friendly alternative. Stored locally on devices or hardware tokens supporting FIDO2, passkeys require biometric authentication for added protection. As digital crime rises, tech companies are promoting passkeys as a more secure replacement for passwords. Advanced Protection continues to offer traditional two-factor authentication, providing users with flexible security options.
