Google Maps Confirms No Pop-Up Ads Will Interrupt Navigation Experience

Google Maps users were alarmed by what seemed to be a new ad format that popped up during navigation, suggesting quick detours. However, Google has clarified that these are actually “Promoted Pins” that have been around for some time. The ads do not pop up on their own and disappear after a few seconds. This feature allows users to see relevant ads for businesses like gas stations and restaurants along their route, but they do not distract drivers as they only expand when tapped on. While some users claimed the pop-up appeared without any touch input, Google suggests it may have been accidental or a glitch. The ad format resembles Waze’s navigation ads and is currently being tested on a limited basis in Google Maps. It remains to be seen if this feature will be rolled out widely.
