Google to Require Transparency for Election Ads with Digital Alterations

Tech & AI | July 1, 2024, 6:53 p.m.

Google announced new mandatory requirements for advertisers to disclose election ads that use digitally altered content featuring real or realistic-looking individuals or events. This update to Google's political content policy involves a checkbox in ad campaign settings for altered or synthetic content. In-ad disclosures will be generated for feeds, shorts on mobile phones, and in-streams on computers and TV, with other formats requiring a prominent disclosure. Amid the rise of AI-generated text, images, and deepfakes, content platforms face challenges in preventing misuse and misinformation. For the 2024 election cycle, Google will enforce disclosure of AI usage in political ads to combat deceptive activities aimed at manipulating public opinion. This initiative follows similar actions by Meta, which requires advertisers on Facebook and Instagram to disclose digital tool usage in political ads.
