OpenAI's GPT-4 has reportedly become the first AI to pass the Turing Test according to a new study published on the preprint server arXiv. The Turing Test, proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, assesses whether a machine can exhibit intelligence indistinguishable from a human. In this study, participants conversed with a human, an old AI (ELIZA), and two versions of GPT (3.5 and 4). Shockingly, GPT-4 was judged to be human 54% of the time, surpassing GPT-3.5 and ELIZA. However, concerns remain about the simplistic nature of the test and the importance of socio-emotional mimicry rather than raw intellect. This achievement underscores the significant advancements in AI during the GPT era and raises alarms about the dangers of AI, even from esteemed figures in the field.
