In early last year, a hacker infiltrated OpenAI's internal messaging systems, compromising details about the design of their A.I. technologies. Discussions on the company's latest advancements were accessed from an online forum, but the hacker did not breach the systems housing the artificial intelligence itself. OpenAI executives disclosed the breach to employees during a meeting in April 2023, and informed the board of directors. Despite the breach, the incident was not made public as no customer or partner information was compromised. The executives believed the hacker was an individual without ties to a foreign government, so national security was not considered at risk. Surprisingly, law enforcement agencies were not alerted about the incident. This breach highlights potential vulnerabilities in the security of valuable A.I. technologies and the importance of safeguarding sensitive information from cyber threats.
