How YouTube's Community Notes Feature Takes a Cue from X's Playbook

YouTube is introducing a new community notes feature, inspired by Twitter, to provide relevant context to videos ahead of the 2024 US election. Viewer-created blurbs will help point out misinformation and old footage presented as new. Initially, a limited number of eligible contributors will be invited to participate in the pilot program, with active and reputable YouTube accounts required. During the pilot phase, third-party evaluators will rate the notes for helpfulness to train the system. YouTube aims to gradually launch the feature after testing and fine-tuning. Viewers will be able to rate notes as helpful or otherwise, with note ratings determined by a bridging-based algorithm. This system may help prevent abuse, as notes rated by diverse groups as helpful are more likely to appear. YouTube's community notes feature mirrors a similar feature introduced on Twitter under Jack Dorsey, expanded globally after Elon Musk's acquisition in 2022. The company plans to roll out the pilot on mobile in the US first, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks and months.
