Character.AI, backed by a16z, has introduced a groundbreaking feature that allows users to communicate with AI characters through calls, supporting a variety of languages. The startup tested this feature with over 3 million users making 20 million calls before the public launch, with applications ranging from language practice to mock interviews.
Users can easily engage with user-generated AI characters through calls, seamlessly switching between calling and texting. The feature is designed to offer a smooth experience with minimal latency, including an option to interrupt the AI.
In addition, Character.AI recently launched a Character Voices feature to enhance one-on-one chats, boasting over 1 million voices in the app's library. While some users have reported changes in their characters' personalities, the startup clarified that no major alterations were made.
This development coincides with Google's reported efforts to launch its own chatbot platform, highlighting the increasing competition in the AI character communication space.
