Framework’s laptops are designed with easily removable and replaceable mainboards, allowing for simple repairs and upgrades. This unique design also enables users to switch out their original Intel chip for an AMD processor by swapping out the motherboard. Additionally, Framework has announced a collaboration with DeepComputing to introduce a new RISC-V Mainboard with a StarFive JH7110 processor, featuring four 64-bit SiFive U74 RISC-V processor cores with speeds up to 1.5 GHz, Imagination BXE-4-32 graphics, and support for 4K video playback. While this RISC-V processor may not offer top performance, it aligns with the open standard architecture that has gained popularity in recent years. The mainboard is intended for developers and hobbyists to experiment with RISC-V technology, although limited support for operating systems and applications is expected initially. The pricing and availability for this new mainboard are yet to be announced, but it coincides with the release of two other RISC-V laptops on the market.
