NASCAR debuted its first electric prototype racer at the Chicago Street Race in collaboration with ABB, Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. The $1.5 million electric crossover, developed under the NASCAR Impact program, showcases the potential of EVs while also testing fan interest in electric racing. This initiative is not a shift away from gasoline-powered cars, but rather an effort to promote sustainability and electrification in racing. The prototype, driven by NASCAR's David Ragan, boasts a powerful 78-kWh battery and three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors generating 1,000 kW at peak power. NASCAR's head of sustainability emphasized the importance of representing electric vehicles in racing as cool, fun, and accessible. The series aims to install EV charging stations and transition to renewable energy at race tracks by 2028, working towards a net-zero operating emissions goal by 2035.
