Apple's upcoming release of iOS 18 this fall may impact third-party developer apps that currently generate an estimated $393 million in revenue and have been downloaded 58 million times in the past year, as reported by app intelligence firm Appfigures. Apple's practice of incorporating popular features from third-party apps into its own software, known as "sherlocking," has been a common strategy at the Worldwide Developers Conference.
While this approach has allowed Apple to better meet consumer demands and needs, it also raises concerns about fairness and competition. Apps in categories like trail apps, grammar helpers, math solvers, and password managers have been particularly targeted by Apple's new features. These categories have generated significant revenue and downloads, with trail apps leading the pack with $307 million in yearly revenue.
Despite the potential threat to third-party apps, those who continuously innovate and provide unique offerings beyond what Apple offers may still find success in the competitive market.
