iOS Users Experience Quirks in Google Messages RCS Conversations

Apple recently released iOS 18 Beta 2, introducing support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the U.S. This allows iPhone users to communicate with Android users using Google Messages via RCS. After updating, a toggle for RCS Messaging is enabled by default for users on carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. However, users on MVNOs like Google Fi cannot currently enable RCS on iOS. Despite the carrier of the Android recipient, once RCS is active on the iPhone, users can enjoy features like delivery/read receipts and higher-quality media sharing. Google Messages indicates when a conversation is not end-to-end encrypted, leading to discussions about encryption standards between Apple, Google, and industry groups. While some settings are currently missing in Android vs. iOS conversations, Google is expected to address these inconsistencies before the iOS 18 official launch. Overall, the experience of using RCS between iPhone and Android users is straightforward and promising.
