Former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter pled guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a betting scandal that led to his NBA ban. Porter's plea was entered in federal court in Brooklyn, and his sentencing is set for Dec. 18. While he could face up to 20 years in prison, guidelines suggest a sentence of 41 to 51 months. Porter was banned by the NBA for manipulating game outcomes to benefit bettors. He is the first active player expelled for gambling since 1954. The NBA also discovered Porter's own betting activity. Although not a defendant, Porter was implicated in a case charging four others with fraud. Porter reportedly faked injuries to help bettors win, with one man making $1.1 million off an $80,000 bet involving Porter. This high-profile case raises concerns about sports gambling ethics and the consequences for those involved.
