Josh Atencio Selected as Alternate for USA Olympic Team

Josh Atencio, a 22-year-old midfielder from the Seattle Sounders, has been selected as one of four alternates for the United States men's soccer Olympic team heading to Paris. While his role is uncertain, the possibility of teams playing six games in 17 days increases the likelihood of Atencio seeing playing time. With a rule change allowing alternates to replace players on the gameday roster and then be added back for future matches, Atencio could have a significant impact. Joining his teammates after the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal, Atencio will have two weeks of training before their first game against host France on July 24. If he plays, Atencio will be the first active Sounder to appear in the Olympics and will bring a wealth of experience to a team with senior national team appearances and Gold Cup and World Cup representation.
