Kroger Co. plans to sell off more than 60 supermarkets, including Vons and Albertsons locations in California, as part of its merger with Albertsons. The list of closures includes 30 Vons stores, such as those on Fairfax Avenue and West 3rd Street in Los Angeles. The sale, valued at $2.9 billion, is contingent on approval from federal regulators, who blocked the initial deal due to antitrust concerns. The companies aim to allay these concerns by selling a total of 579 stores and facilities. Workers at affected locations will transition to C&S Wholesale Grocers. The planned merger has faced opposition from United Food and Commercial Workers unions, citing potential harm to workers, shoppers, and communities. Kroger and Albertsons defend the merger as necessary to compete with larger rivals like Amazon, Walmart, and Costco. The fate of the deal will be decided in an upcoming trial in August.
