Major players in the music industry, including Sony, Universal, and Warner, have filed lawsuits against AI music start-ups Suno and Udio, accusing them of using copyrighted songs to train their generative tools. The Recording Industry Association of America CEO Mitch Glazier condemned these unlicensed services, claiming they exploit artists' work without permission or compensation. As interest in AI technology grows, artists and creators are pushing back against the industry's use of their work for training purposes. AI leaders claim this falls under "fair use," but many disagree, feeling their work is being taken to potentially replace them in the future. Suno and Udio allow users to generate full songs with text prompts, sometimes resulting in AI-generated songs that closely mimic human-created ones. Despite some restrictions on mimicking specific artists, the tools have still generated songs strikingly similar to original works.
