Marathon Oil will pay a historic $64.5 million penalty and invest $177 million in pollution-cutting measures to settle Clean Air Act violations at oil and gas operations in North Dakota. This is the largest penalty ever for such violations at stationary sources, emphasizing the Biden administration's commitment to enforcing environmental laws. The agreement, announced by the EPA and Justice Department, will hold Marathon accountable for endangering communities and the environment. Violations included the release of harmful pollutants linked to respiratory illnesses and climate change. Marathon is required to reduce over 2.25 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to removing 487,000 cars from the road for a year. This groundbreaking settlement highlights the government's effort to combat pollution and protect public health while signaling a shift towards stricter environmental regulations.
